Therapeutic properties of Nigella (Black cumin seeds).

Nigella (black cumin) seeds contain high amounts of fat (up to 40%), volatile oil (up to 1.5%), saponin, tannins, bitterness (nigellin) and vitamin E and beta-carotene. They have a broad-spectrum therapeutic effect. Seeds improve appetite, have a beneficial effect on the liver, purify kidneys and urinary tract, have a choleretic, carminative, diuretic, anti-bacterial, analgesic, anti-parasitic and smooth muscle relaxing effect. They strengthen the organism’s immunity.

Nigella (black cumin) added to a diet stimulates production of milk, regulates menstruation and improves immunity, activates the gastric function and has a nourishing effect. Along with fennel, cumin and anise seeds, black cumin is the best natural remedy for lactation problems in breastfeeding mothers. Black cumin is also used for treatment of bronchitis, cholelithiasis and oligouria.

Nigella oil is an excellent product, containing valuable unsaturated fatty acids, including linoleic and linolenic acids. Used externally the oil cures inflammatory skin conditions, but may be also used internally. Black cumin oil is cold-pressed, to preserve all its active ingredients. It may be consumed alone or added to other food.

Pregnancy is the only contraindication for the use of black cumin.

Substances contained in black cumin seeds have a comprehensive effect on the human organism:

Compounds contained therein support the immunological system and, among others, stimulate the synthesis of interferon and increase the count of lymphocytes and macrophages that guard our health.

A regular use of black cumin oil for 6-8 weeks leads to a significant reduction of allergy symptoms. Black cumin – similarly to vitamin C – is a great anti-histamine agent.

Black cumin has anti-parasitic properties.

Black cumin supports the cardiovascular system.

Cures hypertension.

Black cumin reduces blood pressure and decreases the risk of thrombosis. Simultaneously it prevents the rise of homocystein levels – a compound associated with development of atherosclerosis.

Prevents ulcers formation in the stomach

Alleviates symptoms of gastro-oesophageal reflux.

Black cumin has a beneficial effect on kidneys.

Black cumin reduces the level of urinary oxalates, thus reducing the risk of kidney stone formation. It also protects kidneys from xenobiotics (e.g. drugs) and heavy metals.

In cuisine black cumin seeds are used as an addition to bread, vegetable products, as an aroma ingredient for wine and, to a lesser extent, as a material for production of an essential oil used in bakery. Milled black cumin seeds are a good substitute for black pepper, because they do not irritate the gastric mucosa in susceptible people.

For centuries has black cumin been used in Asia, Africa and Middle East as a remedy. Black cumin was recommended for:

Direction of use:

1. Black cumin powder: mill seeds to fine dust. Take 1 teaspoonful 2 times a day. May be used as a spice, for bread, meat, cabbage.

2. Black cumin honey: 1 teaspoonful of black cumin per 1 tablespoonful of honey + a teaspoonful of wine or 40% vodka, mix. Take 1 tablespoonful 2 times a day. In case of cold, cough, sinusitis – 1 tablespoonful every 6 hours.

3. Black cumin tincture – Tinctura Nigellae: pour 250 ml of 40% alcohol to half a glass of milled seeds, waits 7 days and filter. Take 5 ml 2-3 times a day with honey or dissolved in milk with honey. Use for external treatment of affected and painful areas, or for rubbing (rheumatism, muscular aches, sport contusions, neuralgias). The tincture may be used for treatment of acne. Supports the treatment of psoriasis, eruptions and dermatoses. For topical treatment of acne-affected and seborrheic skin – 1 tablespoonful of tincuture in 200 ml of mineral water, mixed.

4. Infusion: Pour 1 glass of boiling water or milk over 1 tablespoonful of milled seeds, brew for 20 minutes; filter. Drink 100-150 ml 2-3 times a day. Milk may be sweetened with honey. In respiratory diseases – low doses, but frequently, every 2-3 hours. The infusion may be used for topical application on acne-affected or seborrheic skin. It may be also used as a wash for genitals in cases of infections and inflammations. As an enema – in cases of fungal infections of the colon.

5. Nasal drops for treatment of rhinitis and sinusitis: Pour 100 ml of normal saline (0.9% NaCl, available over the counter in pharmacies) to 1 tablespoonful of milled seeds; boil and leave for 30 minutes, then filter. Fill up to 100 ml with normal saline. Filter through cotton wool. Drop or spray into both nostrils several times a day.
