Cooking
Sodium bicarbonate, referred to as “baking soda” is primarily used in cooking (baking), as a leavening agent. It reacts with acidic components in batters, releasing carbon dioxide, which causes expansion of the batter and forms the characteristic texture and grain in pancakes, cakes, quick breads, and other baked and fried foods. Acidic compounds that induce this reaction include phosphates, cream of tartar, lemon juice, yogurt, buttermilk, cocoa, vinegar, etc. Sodium bicarbonate can be substituted for baking powder provided sufficient acid reagent is also added to the recipe.Many forms of baking powder contain sodium bicarbonate combined with one or more acidic phosphates (especially good) or cream of tartar.

Neutralization of acids and bases
Many laboratories keep a bottle of sodium bicarbonate powder within easy reach, because sodium bicarbonate is amphoteric, reacting with acids and bases. Furthermore, as it is relatively innocuous in most situations, there is no harm in using excess sodium bicarbonate. Also, sodium bicarbonate powder may be used to smother a small fire, as heating of sodium bicarbonate releases carbon dioxide

Medical uses
Sodium bicarbonate is used in an aqueous solution as an antacid taken orally to treat acid indigestion and heartburn.It may also be used in an oral form to treat chronic forms of metabolic acidosis such as chronic renal failure and renal tubular acidosis. Sodium bicarbonate may also be useful in urinary alkalinization for the treatment of aspirin overdose and uric acid renal stones. It is used as the medicinal ingredient in gripe water for infants.

Personal hygiene

Sodium bicarbonate can be used as an exfoliant. Its particles are rounded and fine in texture, making it both effective and gentle on the skin. Using baking soda as an exfoliating scrub will remove dead skin cells, which can be discolored from hyperpigmentation and scarring.

Sodium bicarbonate is also used as an ingredient in some mouthwashes. It works as a mechanical cleanser on the teeth and gums, neutralizes the production of acid in the mouth and also as an antiseptic to help prevent infections occurring.

Soda loading
Small amounts of sodium bicarbonate have been shown to be useful as a supplement for endurance athletes,but overdose is a serious risk.

As a cleaning agent
A paste from baking soda can be very effective when used in cleaning and scrubbing.For cleaning aluminium objects, the use of sodium bicarbonate is discouraged as it attacks the thin unreactive protective oxide layer of this otherwise very reactive metal. A solution in warm water will remove the tarnish from silver when the silver is in contact with a piece of aluminium foil.

Cattle feed supplement
Sodium bicarbonate is sold as a cattle feed supplement, in particular as a buffering agent for the rumen.

USAGE DIRECTION
General Cleaning
To remove grease and stubborn stains, mix 2 tablespoons of Baking Soda with 1 tablespoon of Lemon Juice to form a foaming mix. Apply to a damp cloth and clean.

Unpleasant Smell of Carpet?
Sprinkle the Baking Soda evenly all over the carpet (use a sieve to get equal covering), Let it sit there in the carpet for 3-4 hours then vacuum it up.The smell should be gone and the carpet smelling fresh and clean.

Does your Fridge Smell?
Leave a bowl of Baking Soda in the fridge for 24 hours and any nasty odors will be soaked up by the Baking Soda.

Unpleasant smell of Wet Dog?
Sprinkle Baking Soda over your dogs fur and brush it through. The baking soda should mop up all the odors as its brushed through

Stinky Cat Litter Box?
Sprinkle Baking Soda  into the kitty litter each morning.Start with a fourth of a cup. Sprinkle, then leave the room. Return after about an hour. If your nose detects stench, add another fourth of a cup and call it a day

Stinky Toilet?
To clean the toilet, first flush the toilet. Then dump a cup of baking soda in, close the lid and let the bubbles do the scrubbing for you. Return in about an hour and flush

Smelly Coolers and Thermos Bottles?
Fill both these camping devices with a baking soda / water combination. In a thermos bottle, start with a tablespoon baking soda to up to 3 cups water. Just mix and leave in the thermos for about 20 minutes, then rinse. For the cooler, fill the entire cooler with water, add ½ cup baking soda, shut the lid and return in an hour. Rinse.

Drain with Foul Odor?
Add a few tablespoons to the stinky drain a few times a week as a matter of habit. After about an hour, run the hot water for a few minutes. Drains will cease to smell in very little time at all.

Smelly Shoes?
Sprinkle a teaspoon into a each of shoe.Leave for 3-4 hours then wash it.Your shoes will clean-smelling with baking soda.

Stinky Hands After Cutting Onions?
After slicing onions, mix a few tablespoons baking soda in a cup of water and wash your hands in this mixture. Don’t forget to rinse.

Bad Breath?
mix a few tablespoons baking soda in a cup of water then take a mouthful and swish the bad sulfur smell out of your mouth once and for all.Spit it out, don’t swallow it.

Bad Smell Emanating from underarm?
Mix up ½ cup baking soda with 6 drops of your favorite essential oil. The essential oil must be edible, not synthetic.Mix together and place in a small cosmetic jar.Dust it on your underarm.

Culinary Uses
• Baking soda is a natural tenderiser. Thus, it can be added to soaked beans etc. before pressure cooking. Baking soda quickens the cooking process.
• As a leavening agent, it is used in baking. Baked recipes leavened using baking soda usually have a lighter crumb and show signs of aeration (in form of tiny holes) because of the escape of carbon dioxide.
• A pinch of soda added to tomato sauce while cooking helps reduce acidity.
• It is added in Gujarati snacks like dhokla, muthia etc.
•Iced tea clarifier: Add a pinch to brewed tea before chilling and put an end to cloudy iced tea. (Baking soda also softens tannins for a smoother flavor.)
